Why Keeping Your Pool Clean Is Important

Most pool owners know that it is a good idea to keep the pool clean. Some basic maintenance like skimming and adding the proper chemicals can keep your pool in tip-top shape for when those summer months roll around you’re wanting to cannonball your way into that cool, refreshing water. But what many pool owners don’t know is that when you don’t keep your pool clean, you risk not only costing yourself more money in the long run since you’ll have to pay a professional to get your pool back into working shape, but you could also be risking extra wear and tear on your equipment which could lead to costly repairs down the line.

For instance, many pool owners let their pool go green during the months throughout the year when they’re not using it. The logic is often “well I’ll cover it, so no light will get in and the algae will die”. This isn’t great logic, however, because there are many forms of pool algae which can thrive quite well in low-light conditions. Additionally, not even cold weather will always kill algae, since it just goes into a less active state in cold water, in many cases.

When the algae sits in your water for months on end without treatment, the resulting chemical makeup change of your water can wreak havoc on your pool’s plaster and equipment. Even if you don’t have plaster and instead have concrete or even steel pool walls, you can open your pool up to damage and excessive staining by leaving your pool green.

So as you prepare for these warm summer months – the most active time for your pool – remember that even in the off season, you need to keep up with the basic maintenance for your pool if you want it to be ready when you need it. If you’d rather not do this yourself, that’s fine. Do yourself a favor and hire a professional to do the job for you. Not only will you be able to relax and enjoy your pool without the worry or hassle of maintaining it yourself, but you’ll find that the pool looks and feels great year-round.
