Get Your Pool Ready For Tucson Summer 2026
Summer seems to come earlier every year in Tucson, doesn’t it? This year is a great example of that, with temperatures having already broken 100 degrees Fahrenheit here in the desert southwest. If your pool isn’t setup and ready for that, you’re bound to be scrambling right when you’d rather be jumping in and cooling off. The good news is that you don’t have to fret too much; with a little prep work right now, you can head into summer with clear water and smoothly running equipment.
Visually Inspect Your Pool And Equipment
Before you start flipping switches and pouring in chemicals, it’s a good idea to take a slow walk around your pool and the equipment area. Look for cracks, chips in the plaster, loose or broken tiles, and any damage your pool decking might have developed during the winter months. Then you’ll want to check the pump, filter housing, and any visible plumbing for signs of leaks and / or wear. Catching these small problems now ensures you won’t be dealing with them as an emergency later on. This saves both time and money, so it’s well worth it.
Clean Everything Top To Bottom
Tucson’s winter winds still have plenty of dust, debris, and grit. Even if you’ve been running your system occasionally during the off season, a thorough and deliberate clean-up is in order as the next step. Skim the surface of the pool, brush the walls and floor, and vacuum out any debris which has settled at the bottom. Don’t forget to clean out your skimmer baskets and pump baskets as well. These often become a home (or tomb) for lots of fun little desert critters.
Test, then Balance Your Water Chemistry
Good water chemistry is the foundation for a healthy pool, and it’s the main area where pool owners run into confusion and then trouble. Before you start swimming, you’ll want to test the water pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, and chlorine levels. Tucson’s intense solar exposure, heat and overall climate can rapidly deplete sanitizer, so staying on top of your chemicals is especially important here.
Aim for a pH between 7.4 and 7.6 to start out. Total alkalinity should be between 80 and 120 ppm, and chlorine should be about 1 – 3 ppm. If your numbers are out of range, adjust slowly and gradually rather than all at once, allowing time for settling and retesting after each adjustment. Getting this part right will ensure you have a smooth swimming season for the rest of the year.
Check Your Pool’s Equipment
Your pump and filter equipment do the heavy lifting for your pool all summer long. Making sure the pump is primed and running efficiently and that your filter is clean are key ingredients to having a fun and care-free swimming experience. In Tucson’s intense summer heat, it can also be prudent to set your equipment timer to run at night when things are cooler. An added bonus is that running your equipment during off-peak hours for electricity can reduce costs there as well.
